Dave A. Anderson

Bank Management Simulation

Dave is currently a Central Point of Contact/Senior Examiner for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City , Denver Branch. He has oversight, examination planning, and monitoring responsibility for several 10th district financial institutions in Colorado , Wyoming , and New Mexico . He was an examiner with the FDIC for four years in South Dakota and Minnesota , and joined the Federal Reserve in 1988. He graduated from GSBC in 2001.

 

Allyson Aragon-Fenton

Using Myers-Briggs to Better Understand Yourself and Others - Level 1

Allyson has been with JPMorganChase and it's predecessor organizations since 1983 where she's held a number of positions. Most of Allyson's career has been in Training and Development supporting various business units with everything from soft skills to technical training as well as project management and change readiness. In these roles, Allyson has contributed to providing a more disciplined approach to education by designing and implementing performance standards, education methodologies and processes and consistent reporting for senior management regarding financials and productivity.

 

Allyson is currently serving as the Business Manager for the Middle Market Credit organization for the firm and in this capacity she focuses on Training, Communication, H/R related issues as well as focusing on the financials for the group. Allyson has been on the faculty for the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado for 12+ years providing training on the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory.

Bill K. Campbell

Bank Management Simulation

Bill is currently an independent senior banking consultant, working with the International Executive Service Corps, Financial Volunteer Service Corps and the Barents Group of Bearing Point (formally KPMG Consulting) on USAID banker training assignments in the former Soviet Republics , Egypt , Morocco and Eastern Europe . Also Bill has worked with the University of Delaware in Hanoi Vietnam . He was previously Vice Pres. with Banc One Corporation holding positions as Manager of Credit Training for the Western Region, Manager of Special Credits Division, Regional Commercial Loan Center Manager, Branch Credit Administrator and Branch Manager.

 

Bill has served as chairman of the American Bankers Association BankSim committee. He is currently an instructor at the Pacific Coast Banking School , the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado , Ohio Banking School , the Bank Marketing School and the Dakota School of Banking. Bill received his BS from the University of Arizona and is a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School .

 

Jerry Crigger, D.A.

Loan Portfolio Management

Jerry Crigger is Senior Consultant: Credit and Risk for Omega Performance Corporation (Omega), an international consultancy specializing in performance improvement for financial institutions. Prior to joining Omega, Dr. Crigger served as State Risk Officer for Wachovia Bank's Mid-South Region, responsible for overall credit quality and approvals for Tennessee , Alabama , Mississippi , and NW Florida. Wachovia's appointment resulted from the merger of Wachovia and SouthTrust Bank. While with SouthTrust, Jerry was the Chief Credit Officer for the Central Region: Alabama , Tennessee , Mississippi , NW Florida, Virginia , and Texas . He served on SouthTrust Bank's Senior Loan Committee and Credit Policy Committee.

 

Dr. Crigger's banking career spans over thirty-two years, having served twenty-six of those years lending or managing the lending function. He served eight years as a Senior Lender for a Community Bank Market for SouthTrust Bank, as well as having experience managing Georgia Corporate Lending for SouthTrust Bank. The six years prior to launching his consulting activities, Jerry served as a Chief Credit Officer as noted above.

 

Jerry holds a Doctor of Arts in Economics from Middle Tennessee State University , a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tennessee , and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee . He is also a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

 

Dr. Crigger has held banking school and university faculty positions for over twenty-five years. Kyle Enger

Kyle D. Enger is a founding partner and principal at BBI Financial where he is active in the consulting, training and structuring merger and acquisition transactions. In his role as a consultant, Kyle specializes in working with closely held companies in the areas of financial management, valuation and preparation for sale. As a trainer, Kyle's engaging presentation style has made him one of the most requested presenters at all of the countries top banking schools. Kyle has taken a lead role in structuring and negotiating complicated merger and acquisition transactions, with deal sizes ranging from $5 million to $200 million.

Charlie Funk

A CEO's Perspective on Bank Management

Charlie Funk is currently President & CEO of MidWest One Financial Group (formerly ISB Financial Corp.), a $1.5 billion company based in Iowa City , Iowa . He is also President & CEO of MidWest One Bank also based in Iowa City . He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the bank, including Commercial Banking, Retail Banking, Trust & Investment Management and Data Processing. A further expectation of this job is to be a community leader in the Iowa City and Johnson County areas.

 

Charlie came to ISB Financial Corp., from Des Moines where he was President of Brenton Bank Des Moines and Central Region Manager for Brenton Banks, Inc. Prior to becoming the Des Moines President, he was Chief Investment/ALCO Officer from 1992 to 1998 and was responsible for management of the bank's investment portfolios as well as the company's asset/liability management. He also managed the company's bond mutual fund and was a member of the Asset Liability Committee, Pension Committee, and Trust Investment Committee.

 

Charlie received his undergraduate degree from William Jewell College in Liberty , Missouri and is also a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. In addition to being a GSBC Faculty member, he has also served on the faculty at the Iowa School of Banking, Kansas-Nebraska Schools of Banking, Inc, and at Stonier.

 

 

 

 

Jeffrey C. Gerrish

Enhancing Shareholder Value With or Without Sale

Mr. Gerrish is Chairman of the Board of Gerrish McCreary Smith Consultants, LLC and a member of the Memphis based law firm of Gerrish McCreary Smith, PC, Attorneys. The two firms have assisted over 1,200 community banks in 48 states across the nation. Mr. Gerrish's consulting and legal practice places special emphasis on strategic planning for boards of directors and officers, community bank mergers and acquisitions, bank holding company formation and use, acquisition and ownership planning for boards of directors, regulatory matters, including problem banks, memoranda of understanding, and cease and desist matters and compliance issues, capital raising and securities law concerns, ESOPs and other matters of importance to community banks. He formerly served as Regional Counsel for the Memphis Regional Office of the FDIC with responsibility for all legal matters, including cease and desist and other enforcement actions. Before coming to Memphis , Mr. Gerrish was with the FDIC Liquidation Division in Washington , D.C. where he had nationwide responsibility for litigation against directors of failed banks. He has been directly involved in fair lending, equal credit and fair housing matters, in raising capital for problem financial institutions and in numerous bank merger transactions. Mr. Gerrish is an accomplished author, lecturer and participates in various banking-related seminars. In addition to numerous articles, Mr. Gerrish is also the author of the books " Commandments for Community Bank Directors " and “ Gerrish's Glossary for Bank Directors ”. He also is or has been a member of the faculty of the Independent Community Bankers of America Community Bank Ownership and Bank Holding Company Workshop, The Southwestern Graduate School of Banking Foundation, the Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking, the Pacific Coast Banking School, the Colorado Graduate School of Banking and has taught at the FDIC School for Commissioned Examiners and School for Liquidators. He is a member of the Board of Regents of the Paul W. Barret, Jr. School of Banking. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Maryland and received his law degree from George Washington University 's National Law Center . Roger Guerin

Formerly was Principal Bank Examiner for 11 years for the State of Maine Bureau of Banking. Graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. in Finance and Accounting. Donald Hackett

Managing and Improving Your Bank's Quality Service

A native Oklahoman, Dr. Hackett graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in accounting and finance. While in college, he was a member of the OU President's Leadership Class.

 

After being commissioned in the U.S. Army, Lt. Hackett served with the 3 rd Squadron, 17 th Cavalry in the Republic of Viet Nam . He retired as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve.

 

Upon returning from Viet Nam , Hackett worked in responsible positions for two Fortune 500 firms, the Kerr McGee Corporation in Oklahoma City and Federated Department Stores in Los Angeles , California . He returned to the classroom at the University of Oklahoma as an NDEA fellow and received his DBA in Marketing. In 1973, he joined the faculty of the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University , Wichita , Kansas , as an Assistant Professor of Marketing.

 

Within the University, Dr. Hackett was Director of Graduate Studies in Business from 1974-1980 and Director of the Center for Management Development from 1989-1992. He served as the Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship from 1993 to 2005. He is the recipient of the prestigious WSU Regents Award for “Excellence in Teaching.”

 

He has written extensively in the fields of marketing and management, with articles appearing in such journals as The Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Advertising, Real Estate Today, Journal of Small Business and Journal of Accounting. He authored a monograph entitled “Franchising, Status and Strategies,” published by the American Marketing Association and co-authored with Dr. Charles Martin “Facilitation Skills for Team Leaders,” published by Crisp Publications.

 

He is an active consultant and has worked with many national firms including PepsiCo, Raytheon Aircraft, Canadian Pacific Railway, The Coleman Company, and Farm Credit Banks. He also instructs in the prestigious Graduate School of Banking in Boulder , Colorado .

 

His rich management background in business and military organizations, combined with his consulting and academic experiences provide a unique resource for his audiences. Groups he has worked with long remember his practical solutions to their problems conveyed in a warm and humorous manner.

Richard Hamm

Commercial Real Estate Lending

Richard Hamm provides consulting and training to banks and businesses as owner of Advantage Consulting & Training in Huntsville , AL . He specializes in lending and credit training for banks, plus consulting and CFO-type services to businesses on issues such as strategic planning, optimization of capital structure and financing, and treasury management. Mr. Hamm is a Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) [formerly Certified Cash Manager or CCM]. Previously, Mr. Hamm was with The Bank (HQ – Birmingham , AL , now Superior Bank) as executive vice president and senior credit officer. Although based in Huntsville , he functioned as the “deputy chief credit officer” and worked with bankers throughout The Bank's market areas: North Alabama, the Birmingham area, South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle (27 locations, about $1.3 billion in assets). He directly supported the residential construction and commercial lending teams in Birmingham . Prior to The Bank, Mr. Hamm was a regional chief credit officer for an 11-county, 32-branch, 60-lender group with approximately $1 billion in assets for Colonial Bank (then $16 billion in total assets), also Alabama based. For both banks, he successfully developed and conducted comprehensive credit and underwriting training around existing policies, approval forms, and analytical tools, and he created and introduced new tools, all tailored to the banks' community bank profiles.

 

Mr. Hamm's earlier positions consisted of various commercial lending roles in regional banks, primarily for middle market businesses in northern Alabama and the metro Birmingham markets. His experience includes specialty areas such as capital markets, commercial real estate, asset-based loans, government contractors and healthcare. At one point, Richard managed a regional bank's Portfolio Management Group within the credit administration function at the headquarters level, with responsibility for (1) reporting of loan quality and other trends bank-wide and across all types of loans, (2) a commercial lending industry analysis group that researched industry trends and conditions, and reported and assessed industry concentrations, and (3) commercial credit training for entry-level lenders. In another previous position, he managed commercial loan training for entry-level and experienced lenders, including development of a comprehensive curriculum for both groups.

 

Scott Hein

Economics for Community Bankers

Scott E. Hein, Ph.D., is the holder of the Briscoe Chair of Bank Management and Finance at Texas Tech University and is the faculty director of the Texas Tech School of Banking, a one week executive education school run in August. Prior to joining the faculty at Texas Tech University in 1983, Dr. Hein was a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis . Professor Hein is a co-author of a new reference book, The Stock Market , written with Rik W. Hafer, published by Greenwood Press (2007). He has also written numerous research papers on far ranging topics in finance and economics, and has traded interest rate futures contracts personally and with a small hedge fund for the last 14 years.

Dr. Hein was born and grew up in Albuquerque , New Mexico . His educational background includes a B.A. and M.A. in economics from the University of New Mexico , and Ph.D. from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University . Scott Hein is married and has two grown daughters and four grandchildren. His wife Ellen is currently the CEO of the Texas Tech Federal Credit Union.

 

Doug Hush

Bank Management Simulation

Mr. Hush is currently a Senior Bank Examiner in the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's Albuquerque Field Office. He has been a field examiner for nearly 19 years and has been Examiner-In-Charge at over 130 bank examinations. He is also the Albuquerque subject matter expert for Bank Secrecy Act and Trust examinations. In 2005 and 2006, Mr. Hush was the Coordinator and Lead Instructor for the FDIC Dallas Region Banker Outreach Program, a program conducted in cooperation with various state trade associations that provided educational seminars for bankers and bank directors in Arkansas , Colorado , Louisiana , Mississippi , New Mexico , Oklahoma , Tennessee , and Texas . Mr. Hush's banking-related career began in 1984 at Alpine Bank & Trust, Glenwood Springs , Colorado , where he worked part-time as a teller and customer service representative while in high school and college. Upon graduation from Abilene Christian University , Abilene , Texas , in 1989, Mr. Hush began his FDIC career in Albuquerque . He is a 2007 graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado . Other than work, Doug and his wife enjoy backpacking, biking, hunting, snorkeling, spending time with their dogs ( Newfoundland and Bassett Hound), and sports - especially Denver Broncos football.

 

Ken Johnson

Competitive Intelligence for Community Banks

Ken Johnson marks his 36 th year in the financial services industry in 2008. Ken's background includes executive level consulting, strategic planning, director & executive level education programs, commercial lending, correspondent banking, corporate services & cash management, and technology management.

 

Ken is founder and principal of Ken Johnson Consulting, an independent bank consulting practice. He does strategic planning facilitation, director and executive management educational sessions, and bank profitability improvement reviews with banks of all sizes throughout the United States . Ken is a frequent speaker at state and national financial industry association events on a variety of topics. He is a faculty member of Graduate School of Banking programs as well as several banking school programs sponsored by state banking associations. Ken has been a session facilitator at the Assembly of Bank Directors sponsored by the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas , TX . Ken was one of the founding faculty members of the Academy of Professional Banking (formerly the Professional Master of Banking School ) sponsored by GSB -LSU and the Independent Community Bankers of America. Ken has been a featured speaker and session facilitator at The Bank CEO Network program. He also is author of more than 50 published articles on banking-related topics.

 

Ken was with Alex Sheshunoff Management Services for nearly ten years; most recently serving as the Managing Director of the High Performance Peer Group Affiliation Program. Before joining Alex Sheshunoff, Ken was with a large Texas bank holding company for over twenty-one years.

 

Ken earned his BBA from the University of Texas at Austin and is a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at LSU, Bank Leadership Texas, sponsored by the Texas Bankers Association, and the Disney Institute's programs for Leadership, Creativity, and Innovation.

Jeff Judy

Commercial Lending Level 1, Commercial Lending Level 2

Jeff Judy's goal is to make institutions more effective and efficient in managing organizational issues and customer relationships. He contributes to enhanced institutional performance through better understanding of the strategic outcomes of bank activities. Jeff provides a framework for understanding not only the “how” of an activity, but the “why” and benefits of that activity. He offers culture assessment and development, curriculum and course development, training delivery, and general consulting.

 

Jeff draws on many years of experience in the financial services industry, in both international and domestic areas. This experience in lending, credit administration, credit policy, and credit training are complemented with experience in operations and marketing. Jeff draws upon the entire body of his work experiences to provide his clients with learning experiences that deliver true practical value for participants.

 

Jeff has held positions with Continental-Illinois National Bank, Norwest Banks, Norwest Corporation, and AgriBank FCB. He is a consultant and trainer for several national graduate schools of banking and state bank associations, such as Independent Community Bankers Association, Conference State Bank Supervision, RMA, and individual bank clients. Primary areas of focus are credit risk management, credit culture, customer relationship management, and credit training.

 

Jeff is a graduate of Simpson College and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

 

James A. Kisch

James has 17 years of banking industry experience and 10 years expertise in the disciplines of bank of operations and information technology management. He has acquired an extensive understanding of bank management and a strong background in information technology, data processing, software application development, asset and liability management, bank operations, funding, risk management, budgets and forecasting, bank profitability, financial analysis, bank regulation and compliance, marketing and lending. His current emphasis is on information technology audit, information security, policy development, strategic planning, product development, customer relationship management (CRM), operating efficiency, network design and project management.

 

Brent Klanderud

Bank Management Simulation

Mr. Klanderud currently serves as the Field Supervisor – Risk Management for the Omaha Territory of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.  In that capacity he oversees 23 examiners working out of Field Offices located in Omaha , Nebraska and Grand Island , Nebraska .  They provide direct examination oversight for 152 State Nonmember banks located in Nebraska and Southwest Iowa .  He has served in numerous positions during his 22 years with the FDIC including Field Supervisor, Case Manager, Review Examiner, and Examiner.  Mr. Klanderud graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado in 1999 and currently serves as the Regulator for the Bank Management Simulation exercise.

 

Timothy W. Koch, Ph.D.

Asset & Liability Management II Level 1, Asset & Liability Management II Level 2

Timothy W. Koch, Ph.D. is Professor of Finance at the University of South Carolina .  In October 2001 he agreed to additionally serve as President of the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado (GSBC), the premier graduate banking school for community bankers.

 

Dr. Koch's research interests include bank performance analysis, risk management, the use and pricing of options, swaps and financial futures, and the pricing of fixed income securities. He is coauthor of Bank Management , a leading college textbook, and numerous articles in academic journals and banking publications. Prior to being named President of GSBC, Tim taught at all of the graduate schools of banking throughout the U.S. During the 1990's, he also conducted extensive seminars in risk management topics throughout Eastern Europe as part of the U.S. Treasury's program to familiarize bankers in this part of the world with effective risk management practices.

 

Tim regularly speaks to community bankers and bank directors on performance and risk management topics. He also consults with a community bank in South Carolina on strategy and risk management issues.

 

David Kohl, Ph.D.

Agriculture Credit

David Kohl received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University . From August 1978 through June 2003, Kohl was Professor of Agricultural Finance and Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), Blacksburg , Virginia . From June 1999 through May 2001, Dave was on special leave working on cutting-edge initiatives that will strategically position the Royal Bank of Canada in the marketplace. Afterwards, he resumed his academic duties at Virginia Tech. Kohl is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech.

 

Kohl has traveled over 5.8 million miles throughout his professional career! He has conducted more than 4,000 workshops and seminars for agricultural groups such as bankers, Farm Credit, FSA, and regulators, as well as producer and agribusiness groups. He has published four books and over 400 articles on financial and business-related topics in journals, extension, and other popular publications. Kohl regularly writes for Farm Journal, Top Producer, Ag Lender, Journal of Agricultural Lending, and Soybean Digest.

He has received 11 major teaching awards while teaching over 10,000 students, and 15 major Extension and Public Service awards from Virginia Tech, Cornell University , and state and national organizations. Kohl is a two-time recipient of the prestigious American Agricultural Economics Association's Outstanding Teaching Award. Kohl is only one of five professors in the 88-year history of the Association to receive the award twice. He received the Governor's award for his distinguished service to Virginia agriculture, the youngest recipient to receive this award.

 

Kohl has addressed the American Bankers Agricultural Conference for 28 consecutive years, and has appeared before numerous state bankers' schools and conferences throughout the U.S. , Canada , Mexico , and the world.

As facilitator of the United States Farm Financial Standards Task Force and member of the Canadian Agricultural Financial Standards Task Force, Dr. Kohl was one of the leaders in establishing guidelines for the standardized reporting and analysis of agricultural producers' financial information on a national and international basis. Recently, a $2 million endowed Chair of Agribusiness Management and Finance was established at Virginia Tech in the name of Dr. Kohl. This was in honor of his long-term commitment to teaching, research, and extension, and is one of only four such Chairs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech.

Edward A. Krei

Edward A. Krei is a Managing Director with The Baker Group, an investment firm based in Oklahoma City , specializing in investment portfolio services, asset liability management, and strategic planning for community based financial institutions.

 

A frequent speaker at banking and investment conferences, Ed has spoken for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, the OCC, OTS, FFIEC, Conference of State Bank Supervisors, several Federal Home Loan Banks, and state banking and securities regulatory agencies. He has served as faculty member of numerous banking schools, including the Graduate School of Bank Investments and Financial Management, the ABA National Commercial Lending Graduate School , and the Graduate Schools of Banking at SMU, Colorado and LSU. Ed has served as a consultant to central banks in Europe and Russia .

 

Ed received a BBA with honors in accounting from the University of Mississippi and was gold medalist on the CPA examination in Tennessee . He participated in the Leadership Oklahoma City program and has served on the Boards of numerous civic and charitable organizations including Junior Achievement, Goodwill Industries, Rotary Club #29 and the Arthritis Foundation.

 

Larry McGraw

Larry attended Luther College in Decorah , IA and majored in Business Management and Economics. After graduation he worked for three years with the FDIC as a bank examiner out of Minneapolis , MN .  Larry spent the next 15 years working in a community bank in Iowa .  In 2001, he became President of United Prairie Bank in Owatonna , MN . ( Owatonna was one of seven charters in the holding company.)  United Prairie Bank has since consolidated seven charters into one charter. Larry was promoted to a Regional President and Board of Director after the consolidation. This is a family owned bank with an asset size of $500 million.

 

He is a 1994 graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado . Larry has two daughters, Jessica and Melissa.

Bob, who is Chairman of the firm's Financial Services Division, serves as counsel to well over 100 financial institutions (banks and savings banks) and bank and financial holding companies. His representation includes borrowers and lenders in factoring transactions, as well as representation of numerous professional corporations, involving physicians, accountants and attorneys.

Donald Musso

Donald founded FinPro, Inc. in 1987 as a consulting and investment banking firm located in New Jersey that specializes in providing advisory services to the financial institutions industry.

 

Donald has a broad background in strategic planning, asset/liability management, market feasibility assessments, de novo bank formation and investment banking. Besides his consulting experience, he has solid industry experience, having worked for two multi-billion asset, east coast financial institutions.

 

Donald has significant de novo experience as a founder, significant shareholder and Board member. He helped form Nittany Financial Corporation in 1998 and served as Audit Chairman until the Bank was sold in 2006. Currently, Donald is in the process of forming Madison National Bank, In Organization in Long Island . He also is a significant investor in numerous other de novo's. Donald has provided expert testimony on financial institution matters for the Federal Bankruptcy Court, the Office of Thrift Supervision and the United States Attorney's Office.

 

Donald is a frequent speaker on financial institution related topics and has assisted trade groups such as the ACB, ABA , CSBS and numerous State Organizations in various activities. He is on the faculty of Stonier Graduate School of Banking, teaching Strategic Planning and Mergers and Acquisitions. Karl Nelson

Karl Nelson is the President and Chief Marketing Officer of Institutional Deposits Corp. (SR) , a firm specializing in innovative deposit products for the banking industry. Karl was previously the National Market Development Director for Promontory Interfinancial Network where he worked on national marketing strategies. Karl also served as a Senior Vice President with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta from 1991 through 2002 where he managed the sales and marketing effort, strategic planning, trade association/regulatory outreach effort and served on the bank's ALCO. Prior to joining the Home Loan Bank, Karl was involved for eighteen years with various regional banks including Barnett, Florida National, AmeriTrust Company, Society National Bank, and FNB Atlanta. Karl serves on the faculties of the Graduate School of Banking in Madison , Wisconsin and Boulder , Colorado as well as the faculties of the banking schools in Florida , Georgia , North Carolina , and South Carolina .  

 

Julie Nelson-Meers

Julie is a currently a Senior Vice President at Missouri Bank. Growing up the daughter of a community banker in a small town in central Kansas , Julie discovered her interest in banking and small business at an early age. After graduating from the University of Kansas in 1988 with a degree in Business, Julie moved to Kansas City and spent 8 years working with regional banks, Commerce Bank and Mark Twain Bank, as a middle market commercial lender.

 

In 1996, Julie joined Missouri Bank as a commercial lender. She quickly developed a reputation in her market as an advocate and financial educator for small business, particularly for those in the creative industry. Today she serves as Senior Vice President with responsibilities in both Commercial Lending and Marketing. Julie sits on the ALCO and Special Assets committees and serves as part of the bank's Executive Management Committee. Julie has served on numerous boards and committees and is a frequent guest speaker on a range of entrepreneurial, banking, and financial topics. She lives in Kansas City , Missouri with her husband Sam and daughter Katherine.

 

David P. Nowling

Understanding Your Bank's Culture for Strategic Alignment, Leading Organizational Change in the 21 st Century

David Nowling is a manager in the Bank Examinations Department with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City – Denver Branch. He has a total of 24 years of regulatory experience serving as a field examiner for 10 years. He has been a manager for over 14 years, managing in both the Examinations and Inspections, and Consumer Affairs Departments in Denver . David has a double major in Finance and Accounting from the University of Colorado , and a Masters in Business Administration from Denver University . He completed the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado in 1999, and received a Certificate in Organizational Development in December 2001.

In addition to his regulatory work, David is on the faculty at the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado where he teaches “Understanding Corporate Culture for Strategic Alignment”. He has extensive experience in cultural change, organizational alignment, job performance and coaching, team assessments and interventions, and communication. He is a certified associate with VitalSmarts and teaches “Mastering Difficult Conversations”.

 

John Norwood, Ph.D.

Business Law in Financial Institutions

John Norwood has taught Business Law in Financial Institutions at GSBC since 2002. “Dr. J.”, as he is known on campus, consistently ranks as one of the top-rated instructors of a core class at GSBC. John is a Professor of Business Law at the University of Arkansas , Walton College of Business, as well as Director of the Honors Program. He is also an adjunct professor at the law school. His educational background includes a B.A. and MBA from Louisiana Sate University , and a JD from Tulane University .

 

John's areas of research interest include commercial law; the relationship between banks and the owners of checking accounts; bankruptcy; and gaming law. He has written numerous research articles throughout his career, and has received many awards and teaching distinctions as well as participates in many University and Community Service activities.

 

Deena Nystrom

Deena is the owner and founder of Results Unlimited, Inc. which does marketing and customer care training for community banks. Prior to beginning her consulting company in 2002, Deena worked at Fifth Third Bank for eighteen years, most recently as the Head of Retail Administration in Indianapolis , IN. Under her leadership, Fifth Third grew from six to seventy-eight banking centers serving 26 counties in central Indiana .

 

Deena was named to Forty Under 40 in May of 1997 and received the Award of Achievement from Ball State University in 1986. Deena was a member of Class 18 in the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership series.

 

Deena is the mother of three children, John-age 8, and twins Whitney and Makenzy-ages 5. The family resides in Greenwood , Indiana . Deena's interests include singing, weight-lifting, water activities and scuba-diving.

 

Jeff Phillips

Jeff Phillips is Vice President of Great Western Bank in Shawnee , KS . An Oklahoma native, he began his banking career as a teller and experienced many different aspects of the banks operations. In 1998, after graduating from Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in Agriculture Economics, he began his career as a loan officer with a $60 million bank in his hometown of El Reno . After earning an MBA from the University of Oklahoma , Jeff was asked to lead the retail efforts of a $4 billion regional bank. Upon accomplishing his goals in that arena, he was allowed to resume his commercial lending position focusing on small to mid-sized operating companies. Desiring to return to his community banking roots, Jeff recently accepted a position with GWB, where in addition to his lending responsibilities; he helps lead branch activities and strategic initiatives.

 

Jeff is a 2004 honors graduate of GSBC and serves as an Alumni Adviser, promoting the school and assisting in recruitment efforts. Jeff is also a faculty member, facilitating Bank Management Simulation for the third year students. He lives in Kansas City , MO with his wife Allison and enjoys movies, hiking and sports.

 

Kevin Priddle

High Performance Community Banking

Mr. Priddle is Executive VP/Cashier and Chief Operating Officer for “The Bank N.A.” in McAlester , Ok. “The Bank” is a $345,000,000 bank located in South East Oklahoma. Rated by ICBA in July 2005 as the 14 th best bank nationally in terms of ROA and ROE, “The Bank” has consistently turned ROA in excess of 2.2% and ROE approaching 30% and above. They have eight branches located among four cities in Oklahoma . Mr. Priddle has a BBA in Management, is a Certified Network Engineer and a programmer in multiple languages. In his twenty-eight years of banking experience he has managed all facets of operations, been involved in the purchase and merger of six financial institutions, was the first individual in Kansas to do check imaging through the data center he personally owned, opened a De Novo Bank, and served on all committees and Board of Directors for financial institutions.

 

Lawrence E. Russell

Larry is a Senior Vice President with Country Club Bank, n.a., Kansas City , in the Capital Markets Group where his responsibilities include portfolio sales and services and administrative duties.

 

Larry graduated with a B.B.A. in Economics and Finance from the University of Oklahoma , Norman , Oklahoma in 1969. He also is a graduate of the ABA Graduate School of Bank Investments. Larry began his career in bank portfolio management in 1973 and has worked with banks in portfolio management and investment management supervision since that time. He joined the staff of Country Club Bank in April, 2004.

 

Larry has worked with several state banking associations and regulatory agencies to educate their staffs and membership concerning bank portfolio management and has served as a presenter at various meetings and conventions. He serves as a guest lecturer at the University of Missouri , Kansas City , Block School of Business, graduate and undergraduate studies.

 

Larry and his wife Dara have two grown children with three grandchildren.

 

Robert L. Schweitzer, Ph.D.

Corporate Governance in Banking

Dr. Schweitzer is Professor of Finance at the University of Delaware in Newark , Delaware . He earned his B.S. degree from Towson State University , an M.A. from the University of Delaware , and his Ph.D. from Duke University .

 

Prior to his present position at the University of Delaware , he was a financial economist at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the National Credit Union Administration, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia . He has held faculty positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , Kent State University, and the University of Notre Dame. He has been a faculty member at Delaware since 1980. He is co-author of Contemporary Developments in Financial Institutions and Markets, Dynamics of Banking, as well as many articles in the professional journals.

 

Robert B. Slade

Robert's professional experience spans over 25 years in the fields of psychology, human resources management, organizational development and executive coaching. He has held executive level positions at Hewlett Packard Company, Poudre Valley Health System, and New Belgium Brewing Company.

 

Robert is a faculty member at Mountain States Employers Council, Denver, Colorado, The Graduate School of Banking at the University of Colorado, Boulder; The Graduate School of Banking at the University of Washington; and the Office of Personnel Management, Western States Management Development Center in Aurora, Colorado.

Donna de St. Aubin

Donna de St. Aubin's human resource and management expertise spans more than 25 years and includes executive human resource positions in the health care, manufacturing, financial and insurance industries.

 

In addition to her experience in human resource management, planning and internal staffing, Ms. St. Aubin has also been involved in major corporate mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and consolidations.

Michael L. Stevens

Bank Financial Analysis

Mike serves as the Senior Vice President for Regulatory Policy at the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS). In this capacity, Mike represents the state banking system in the development of federal regulatory policy in the areas of consumer protection and safety and soundness. He is also responsible for any issues related to the coordination and cooperation between state and federal regulators. Mike serves as the staff director for the Regulatory Committee, State Federal Working Group, and the FFIEC's State Liaison Committee. Prior to this assignment, Mike worked in all facets of CSBS's Professional Development Division. He is a frequent instructor and speaker on bank examination, bank financial analysis and regulatory issues. Mike serves on the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado , the Texas Tech Bank School and the Graduate School of Bank Investments and Financial Management. Prior to joining CSBS in 1999, Mike was a bank examiner for the Iowa Division of Banking for 11 years.

Lynda Swenson

Lynda D. Swenson has over 30 years of diversified experience in the Financial Services Industry. She has worked in and with financial services organizations, encompassing all functional areas and lines of business in banks, savings and loans, and other financial institutions. Her experience ranges from de novo to community to super regional institutions to the Federal Reserve System. Internationally, she consults and trains in numerous locations, such as Hong Kong , Ghana , Bosnia and Bulgaria and was also the Resident Advisor to the Czech Institute of Banking under USAid. In addition, she trains for RMA (Risk Management Association) in the areas of Credit Analysis and Small Business Lending.

 

Ms. Swenson serves as the educational consultant for the Harry Blythe School of Banking in Ohio, and has been on the faculty of the Colorado Graduate School of Banking, the ABA's Stonier Graduate School of Banking, the Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking, the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington, the University of Texas Banking School and the SMU Banking School. She was adjunct faculty for the School of Business at Ohio University , and has also taught for the American Management Association.
